SURGICAL DENTURES

Surgical Dentures are most often referred to as immediate dentures. These dentures are for patients transitioning from natural dentition to fully edentulous.

The dentures will be fabricated before patients have their natural teeth extracted, it takes 1-2 appointments before extraction are made by their dentist/ oral surgeon. Following the removal of the patient’s existing teeth, dentures will be inserted immediately after,  this way allowing patients to never go without teeth.

Because surgical dentures are a transitional treatment, each patient’s recovery and adaptation period will differ. As the healing process takes place the tissue will start to resorb and change its shape, thus causing movement in the denture.  At that point, we will place a temporary liner inside the denture to re-adapt to the new contours of the tissue.

A temporary liner is a thin material that will fill the voids between the denture and the shrunken tissues. As the tissue continues to heal and change shape, the temporary liner will be removed and replaced with a new liner usually 2-3 times over the span of 6 months.  After 8-12 months a permanent reline is necessary for a stable refit of the denture to the proper tissue surface.
